Piano Hinge Book and Screen at BARN

  • BARN 8890 Three Tree Lane NE Bainbridge Island, WA, 98110 United States (map)

Create two book structures using variations of piano hinge binding. One will be cut and shaped to resemble a belted kingfisher and the other will be a folding screen that creates an environment for the bird to inhabit. By using slightly different approaches to the binding in each structure, you’ll see how flexible and adaptable this technique can be.

The piano hinge binding, developed by Hedi Kyle, is a relatively simple structure in which notched page edges are woven together using sticks, string, or paper. By the end of the workshop, you should leave with a clear understanding of how the binding works and the confidence to adapt and use it in your own book projects.
